Lanre's Thoughts ...

Nice Palace but, no King

The King of the land of Kush has just died; he was the best King the people had ever had as the town had not known such peace and tranquillity until the inauguration of King Adele. The town had experienced the best in life in the past forty years that the King reigned. The weeks of sorrow rolled into months as the people could not be consoled. Devastated, the town decided to build a temple in honour of the King and the temple will serve as the King’s tomb as well. The building of the temple started as planned and the King’s son who was now the new king appointed his right hand man to oversee the building of the temple. Ensuring that no expense was spared, the best of the town’s contractors were employed to build the temple. Precious stones from all over the world will be used to adorn the temple. Soon the passion for the project took the people’s mind off mourning King Adele’s death. The town no longer mourned or missed the King’s absence as they saw one layer of block on top of the other, the joy from seeing the temple built and the work of that goes into building the best temple eyes had ever seen soon took over their thoughts. The zeal of building the temple consumed them.

One evening, King Adele’s son was taking a walk round the construction site. He was indeed impressed by how far work had gone, the edifice was definitely going to be the talk of the neighbouring towns. The town of Kush will be a town to be reckoned with, “no longer will we be ignored” king Abi thought to himself. The cities who had once claimed to be stronger and richer will have nothing on them once they see the finished work. The king’s face glowed at the thought of the level of wealth to come through tourism. As he walked into one of the rooms the king hit his feet against a wooded box, he rubbed his feet with his hand to relief the pain the bang had caused. In annoyance, the king ordered one of the workers on site to throw the wooded box out!

Little did king Abi know that the wooden box, now forgotten, hidden under layers of rubble and time was his father’s coffin. The one in whose honour the temple is being built was long forgotten; the construction continued and was finished as planned and sadly at the opening of the temple no one remembered what the project was intended for in the first place!

My question and yours I’m sure is, can a palace be built without remembering the King? Or is it possible for a sculpture to be erected without a mention of the hero in whose honour the tribute is? As eerie as these questions may sound, try answering them in a church and then decide! We gather in our ‘temples’ and the King is outside! We plan the programs and the events and the one in whose name we gather and prepare to honour hasn’t really been seen in a while. In fact, most of those who have met the King do so outside, on their way out of the temple.

The next time you go to the ‘temple’ probably in a few days, make sure you don’t leave till you see the King!
