Lanre's Thoughts ...

Ordinary People, Common Places

You woke up this morning no butler drew your bath, no maid laid out your clothes, and your orange juice wasn’t freshly squeezed. It’s not Christmas and it’s not your birthday either it’s like every other day, a common day! Common cars or should I say buses take you to common jobs that you sometimes take seriously but not enough for you to call it an extraordinary experience. After all, you’re not clearing your diary to have lunch with Beyonce or making time to appear before the house of parliament. A common life punctuated by occasional weddings, graduations, job transfers………… just a few highlights but mainly the day-to-day rhythm that you share with majority of humanity.

If this describes you, take heart because I know a man who lived thirty of his thirty-three years a common chap; except for an incident at the age of twelve, that caused his mother to go berserk from searching for him for three days, there was no record of what he did in those thirty years. If you subscribe to “golf today” or if you are pal with “Manchester United stars” please, don’t bother reading the rest of this article but if you’ve never heard of them, then you sure can identify with this next verse of scripture.

“Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren't His sisters here with us?" So they were offended by Him” Mark 6:3 MSG

Though he was a common carpenter’s son living in the city of Nazareth, a single camel map dot on the edge of boredom! Though his life was common, Jesus’ attention to it wasn’t. The things he said in his last three years shows that his uncommon approach to his common life prepared him for his uncommon call! How else can you explain the carpenter, maker of yokes saying, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”? Matthew 11:30

He must have his share of brushing off sawdust from his eyes for him to say, “Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but don't notice the log in your own eye?”  Matthew 7:3

The memory of the morning and the evening sky made him declare “When evening comes you say, 'It will be good weather, because the sky is red.'”  And in the morning, he said,

“Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can't read the signs of the times” Matthew 16:2-3

Jesus listened to his common life, are you listening to yours?

Rain pattering against the window, a baby’s giggle on a crowded bus, seeing the sunrise while the world sleeps, is God not able to peak through a diaper change or a Thursday wet day?

Next time your life feels ordinary please pay attention to your work and world

Take notes on your life! Perhaps they aren’t so common……………………

Nice Palace but, no King

The King of the land of Kush has just died; he was the best King the people had ever had as the town had not known such peace and tranquillity until the inauguration of King Adele. The town had experienced the best in life in the past forty years that the King reigned. The weeks of sorrow rolled into months as the people could not be consoled. Devastated, the town decided to build a temple in honour of the King and the temple will serve as the King’s tomb as well. The building of the temple started as planned and the King’s son who was now the new king appointed his right hand man to oversee the building of the temple. Ensuring that no expense was spared, the best of the town’s contractors were employed to build the temple. Precious stones from all over the world will be used to adorn the temple. Soon the passion for the project took the people’s mind off mourning King Adele’s death. The town no longer mourned or missed the King’s absence as they saw one layer of block on top of the other, the joy from seeing the temple built and the work of that goes into building the best temple eyes had ever seen soon took over their thoughts. The zeal of building the temple consumed them.

One evening, King Adele’s son was taking a walk round the construction site. He was indeed impressed by how far work had gone, the edifice was definitely going to be the talk of the neighbouring towns. The town of Kush will be a town to be reckoned with, “no longer will we be ignored” king Abi thought to himself. The cities who had once claimed to be stronger and richer will have nothing on them once they see the finished work. The king’s face glowed at the thought of the level of wealth to come through tourism. As he walked into one of the rooms the king hit his feet against a wooded box, he rubbed his feet with his hand to relief the pain the bang had caused. In annoyance, the king ordered one of the workers on site to throw the wooded box out!

Little did king Abi know that the wooden box, now forgotten, hidden under layers of rubble and time was his father’s coffin. The one in whose honour the temple is being built was long forgotten; the construction continued and was finished as planned and sadly at the opening of the temple no one remembered what the project was intended for in the first place!

My question and yours I’m sure is, can a palace be built without remembering the King? Or is it possible for a sculpture to be erected without a mention of the hero in whose honour the tribute is? As eerie as these questions may sound, try answering them in a church and then decide! We gather in our ‘temples’ and the King is outside! We plan the programs and the events and the one in whose name we gather and prepare to honour hasn’t really been seen in a while. In fact, most of those who have met the King do so outside, on their way out of the temple.

The next time you go to the ‘temple’ probably in a few days, make sure you don’t leave till you see the King!
